MediaTek Dimensity 720 set to make 5G affordable

MediaTek has announced a new mid-range chipset. The MediaTek Dimensity 720 aims to bring great performance alongside 5G connectivity.

There are several processors launching from the company. However, the MediaTek Dimensity 720 is one of the notable chips. The new processor will compete with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 690.

The new family of processors includes the Dimensity 1000 series. These processors share the same market as the Snapdragon 865+. Meanwhile, the lower-tier Dimensity 800 and 700 chipsets are for mid-range devices.

5G connectivity without breaking the bank

The majority of 5G capable devices are on a flagship level. It is rare to see a mid-range device with 5G connectivity.

However, that is about to change as the Dimensity 720 is finally out there.

Dr. Yenchi Lee, the Deputy General Manager of the MediaTek Wireless Communications and Business unit shed light on what the new chipset brings.

“The Dimensity 720 sets a new standard, delivering feature-packed 5G experiences and technology to devices that are more accessible to mass-market consumers,” said Lee.

He also added that the new chipset is more power-efficient while delivering excellent performance.

“All of that combined will help brands usher in differentiated 5G devices for consumers around the globe,” he added.

MediaTek Dimensity 720 features

The new 7nm Dimensity 720 chipset will increase battery life without compromising performance.

The battery life increase is achieved through the MediaTek 5G UltraSave technology. This new feature uses “network and content awareness intelligence.” It is responsible for managing the modem’s operation.

Besides the added power and increased screen-on-time, the new CPU helps in better image processing. It also provides a better user experience for entertainment or online connectivity.

The Dimensity 720 has two Arm Cortex-A76 big cores in an octa-core setup. These two cores provide the bulk of the power in a device.

The six extra cores step up whenever the two big cores struggle. This provides a snappy experience for the users.

Graphics are powered by the Arm Mali G57 with LPDDR4X memory. It also supports UFS 2.2 for ultra-fast read and writes speed.

The big core performance allows a device to boost up whenever needed. It then remains in low-power mode for lighter tasks.

More high frame-rate mid-range devices soon

High frame-rate screens are becoming the norm in the mid-range category. Realme and Xiaomi are no offering a 90Hz display for less than US$400 right now.

This advancement in the display is something to watch out for upcoming devices.

The MediaTek Dimensity 720 supports 90Hz high frame-rate devices. It provides users a smoother gaming experience. Regular usage is also a lot better with HFR screens.

This means that smartphone manufacturers now have the means to provide HFR devices at a lower price.

The new processor also enhances video streaming features. It supports MiraVision HDR10+ video playback.

Camera capabilities are tied to the capabilities of a processer. With the Dimensity 720, smartphone manufacturers are now able to support 64-megapixel sensors or dual-camera setups. The AI image processing technology is also improved via the built-in AI processing unit (APU).

First Dimensity 720 phones arriving soon

MediaTek has announced that the first Dimensity 720 devices are arriving “in the coming months.”

The company has not disclosed which devices are arriving with the new chipset. However, Xiaomi already had a headstart with the Redmi 10X powered by the Dimensity 820.

There are speculations that Xiaomi might be the first one to release a Mediatek Dimensity 720 device. Right now, users have no choice but to wait for the announcement.
