AMD's Big Navi technology is coming. Plenty is already known about the RDNA 2 micro-architecture and how it is being used by ninth-generation consoles from Microsoft and Sony. With the incredible advancements Nvidia recently demonstrated with its Geforce RTX 30 Series, many gaming enthusiasts will be keenly anticipating when AMD's new GPU will launch.
AMD has not shared many details about its next GPU, but that's where the upcoming gaming consoles come in. Epic Games, the developer of the Unreal Engine, shared a tech demo on YouTube showing amazing levels of detail, including millions of rendered polygons with 8K textures accurate down to the pixel level. The demonstration also gave a good look at dynamic lighting and global illumination. This is just a suggestion of what will be possible and both the upcoming PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will make use of AMD's advanced graphics.
AMD recently confirmed on Twitter that its next generation GPU, known thus far as 'Big Navi' will be unveiled soon. The full extent of the announcement was, “#RDNA2 architecture and Radeon RX 6000 Series graphics cards will bring the best of Radeon to gamers worldwide. Learn more October 28.” The name was not a surprise, since the previous model was the Radeon RX 5000. More interesting was the launch date given, October 28, 2020. That means there will be a wait of over a month before the latest GPU from AMD will be revealed, let alone ship. Quite a long time, given that Nvidia's GeForce RTX 30 Series launches in about a week. This may prove to be disappointing news for those hoping for a quick and clear comparison between the two top competitors.
AMD Big Navi Versus Nvidia RTX
How powerful will Big Navi be? Well, it will have 4K capability, real-time ray tracing and variable rate shading, matching Nvidia to some degree. Gamers looking to upgrade their graphics cards need to know the price/performance trade-offs between the latest GPUs from Nvidia and AMD. Why hasn't AMD revealed more details? Some speculate that AMD might be bound to holding back details, due to contractual obligations with Sony and Microsoft. The Xbox Series X will launch in November and the PlayStation 5 is expected between October and December. That means there may be few details revealed before launch.
For eager shoppers, waiting may not be a reasonable option. If a new gaming rig is in progress, Nvidia's RTX 30 Series will not be a bad decision. The AMD Radeon 6000 is expected by many to be very, very good, but whether it can outperform Nvidia's best GeForce RTX 3090 is another question. This means it becomes a value proposition, matching the budget to the technology. Radeon cards are often better value and that pattern will likely continue. It would be reasonable to expect Big Navi to be roughly on par with Nvidia's RTX 3080, but priced lower. For now, that is speculation, but it might not be come October 28.
