We’re a month away from entering the last quarter of 2020 (time sure has passed since COVID-19 lockdowns began, hasn’t it?), which means we should be preparing for new OnePlus smartphone announcements. The OnePlus 8 lineup launched earlier this year, and OnePlus is currently enjoying success with its new mid-range smartphone, the OnePlus Nord. The time is approaching for the announcement of the late-year “T” model, though, which we’re expecting in the form of the OnePlus 8T lineup. Now, Android Central is reporting some of the OnePlus 8T’s alleged specifications, and what we’re hearing is pretty standard stuff.
The OnePlus 8T, which is reportedly codenamed kebab, will feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus, which brings slightly improved CPU and GPU performance compared to the regular Snapdragon 865 in the OnePlus 8 series. No surprises there, though, as T devices have previously featured Qualcomm’s mid-year flagship SoC refresh. Last year’s OnePlus 7T series, for example, featured the Snapdragon 855 Plus as an upgrade over the Snapdragon 855 in the OnePlus 7 series.
One of the other improvements that we’ll allegedly see in the OnePlus 8T is a 120Hz OLED display like the OnePlus 8 Pro. The 8T is rumored to have a smaller 6.55-inch display versus the larger 6.78-inch display in the 8 Pro, though. It’s also expected to have a flat display with a hole-punch cutout, unlike the curved displays on the 8 series. The OnePlus 7 Pro was the first device from OnePlus to feature a high refresh rate display at 90Hz, while the OnePlus 7 featured a 60Hz one. The OnePlus 7T, though, followed in the 7 Pro’s footsteps and added a 90Hz panel. We’re seeing a similar pattern here: The OnePlus 8 came with a 90Hz display, and the OnePlus 8T, as its late-year revision, is going to be sporting a 120Hz panel, if this report is to be believed.
AndroidCentral goes on to claim that the OnePlus 8T will feature a quad rear camera setup comprised of a 48MP primary camera, a 16MP wide-angle camera, a 5MP macro camera, and a 2MP depth-sensing camera. The publication claims that 8T’s 48MP image sensor is newer (and better) than the one found in the 8, but they didn’t confirm which sensor will be used. The OnePlus 8 featured Sony’s IMX586 while the OnePlus 8 Pro featured Sony’s IMX689, so it’s possible that the OnePlus 8T will have the IMX689 since that fits the bill.
Interestingly, there’s no mention of a 64MP camera, despite support for it being added in the OnePlus Camera app earlier this year. It’s possible that OnePlus will include the 64MP image sensor on a different phone, though. There’s also no mention of 65W fast charging support that was certified by TÜV Rheinland and spotted in OxygenOS’s Engineering Mode app. It’s possible that the OnePlus 8T will still feature 65W charging, but we’ll have to wait for more leaks (or OnePlus themselves) to confirm either way.
The OnePlus 8T’s launch date might be on the horizon, as AndroidCentral reports that OnePlus is planning to unveil it by the end of this month or in the first week of October. The phone will launch with Android 11-based OxygenOS 11 on board, which isn’t terribly surprising given the status of its development. Oddly, we haven’t heard any rumors about a OnePlus 8T “Pro” model yet. While there could still be one in the works, it would be unusual for it to be kept under wraps while details on the 8T are trickling out. Our own digging into OxygenOS reveals two variants of the 8T are in development: kebab and kebabt, the latter of which is likely a U.S. T-Mobile model. However, we haven’t seen any evidence of a kebabp or kebabpt model, which we would expect to see if there will indeed be a Pro model.
We’ll keep you in the loop if any new information arises, though.
