For AMD, the Ryzen Pro series is extremely important. After all, laptops for corporate use account for a huge part of todays market. Ryzen Pro is AMD's ticket to enter this market, as Ryzen Pro is the competing line of products for Intel's vPro chips.
Last year, reputable brands like HP EliteBooks and Lenovo ThinkPads used the AMD Ryzen Pro 4000 CPUs like the octa-core AMD Ryzen 7 Pro 4750U with great success. The Lenovo ThinkPad T14s AMD with this chip was our highest rated business laptop of 2020.
To iterate on that success on 2021, AMD is releasing Ryzen Pro 5000 CPUs - in the future tense. Unlike their non-Pro brethren, the new CPUs are not publicly announced yet, even though HP and Lenovo have already announced their 2021 EliteBooks and ThinkPads that will contain them.
We have seen glimpses of the new AMD Ryzen 7 Pro 5850U through a benchmark leak already. Both it and its lower end sister model AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 5650U can now be found in a newly released spec sheet for the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 AMD. The recently announced Lenovo ThinkPad laptop is listed on the website thinkstation-specs.com and apparently, the two Ryzen Pro chips will be the only ones used in this lightweight workstation.
The new leak re-affirms the reported turbo-boost clock rates of 4.2 GHz for the Ryzen 5 and 4.4 GHz for the Ryzen 7. New are the base-clock values, which sit at 2.2 (R5) and 2 GHz (R7). The Ryzen 5 Pro 5650U will be a six-core chip (12 threads), while the Ryzen 7 Pro 5850U will have eight cores (16 threads). Both have a floating TDP between 10 and 25 W according to Lenovo.
Based on the announced availability of the next gen Lenovo AMD ThinkPads, we expect a formal announcement of the new Ryzen Pro 5000 CPUs in the coming two months - the 2021 AMD ThinkPads are slated for availability in the month of May.
