We have seen AMD recently introduce laptop and desktop Ryzen 5000 processors based on the Zen 3 architecture. Zen 3-based Threadripper and EPYC Milan offerings, which have only been the subject of leaks and rumors so far, are yet to make their presence felt. While we have previously speculated that Zen 3 Threadripper is likely to start from 16-core SKUs onwards, we are now getting to know some of the specifications of EPYC Milan.
For those not in the know, the AMD EPYC family (EPYC Rome) has several product segments, which include dual-socket (2P), single-socket (1P), HPC (H), and frequency (F) variants. EPYC Milan is slated to provide up to 200 MHz higher frequencies its Zen 2 predecessor, EYPC Rome. We are learning that the EPYC 7763 will boost up to 3.5 GHz (100 MHz higher than EPYC 7742) while the EPYC 72F3 is expected to offer eight cores with boosts up to 4.1 GHz.
We are also getting to know the naming convention behind Milan SKUs thanks to @ExecuFix. According to @ExecuFix, the naming scheme offers several clues about the processor including:
- Product Series - 7001 (Naples), 7002 (Rome), and 7003 (Milan)
- Product Model - 2 (8 cores), 3 (16 cores), 4 (24-28 cores), 5 (32 cores), 6 (40-56 cores), and 7 (64 cores)
- Performance Indicator - 1 (Value), 4,6 (Performance), F (High performance/frequency per core)
- Generation Indicator
- Feature Modifier - P (single-socket)
The image below from Videocardz puts the naming scheme into perspective. So in the case of an EPYC 7443P, we can infer that this processor will be a single-socket, performance-oriented Zen 3 Milan SKU sporting 24 cores.
Videocardz also has put up a list of EPYC Milan, which starts from the EPYC 72F3 — an 8C/16T part with a 3.7 GHz base and 4.1 GHz boost along with 256 MB L3 cache and a 180 W TDP. Milan tops-out at 64 cores, 128 threads with the EPYC 7763 that offers a 2.45 GHz base, 3.5 GHz boost, 256 MB L3 cache, and a 280 W TDP.
AMD, during its CES 2021 presentation, claimed that a 32-core EPYC Milan offers a 68% higher performance compared to the 28-core Intel Xeon Gold 6258R in a weather forecast benchmark. The company is expected to announce the EPYC Milan lineup some time in Q1 2021.
