System76 Is Finally Selling That AMD Ryzen Laptop You Want - Forbes

proc.indah.link

Back in November 2020, Colorado-based Linux hardware company and Pop OS developer System76 promised that an AMD laptop was being prepped. Good thing too, because every time I talked about one of their Intel offerings like the Oryx Pro or Lemur Pro, the majority of your responses were basically "Cool, but Ryzen when?"

Ryzen right now. Right this minute.

My understanding is that engineer Jeremy Soller has been working diligently on a version of Coreboot for Renoir. System76 wanted to trim the BIOS fat from its AMD laptops, too. That results in less proprietary junk, and significantly faster boot and resume-from-standby times.

Take it from someone who tested the Lemur Pro with Coreboot against an identical laptop without Coreboot. It's really, really fast.

However, it doesn’t look like Coreboot will make an appearance in Pangolin. I’m still waiting for confirmation from System76 on that front.

[UPDATE: Jeremy Soller says “Coreboot on AMD has a long way to go before it can be used in a product.”]

MORE FOR YOU

So today, the System76 Pangolin is released into the wild, packing up to an 8-core Ryzen 7 4700U and an integrated 7-core Radeon RX Vega Graphics solution.

The Pangolin is available to order now and starts at $849.

“Our customers have long been asking for a lightweight, versatile laptop fully powered by AMD,” says Sam Mondlick, VP of Sales. “We believe the Pangolin answers this demand with its sleek lightweight design and easily upgradable components. It’s definitely a fantastic addition to our line.”

System76 says the Pangolin is the lightest of its 15-inch laptops, weighing in at 3.65 pounds. It can also be equipped with up to 64GB of RAM and plenty of NVMe storage.

One final note I think many readers will appreciate: the Linux hardware and software maker tells me that due to the ongoing chip shortage and presumably high demand, System76 will not ship provide review units of the Pangolin to press. Instead, it will allocate every unit to paying customers for the time being.
