Apple M1 approaches the unbelievable as Intel Core i9-11900K falters in PassMark's single-thread performance chart - Notebookcheck.net

Not too long ago the Apple M1 made an impressive showing on PassMark by settling into third position behind Rocket Lake’s best in the CPU Mark single-thread performance chart for desktop processors, despite the fact that the Apple Silicon can also be found in laptops. Shortly afterwards, the M1 even leapfrogged the Intel Core i7-11700K, but it seemed the mighty i9-11900K was rock solid at the top on 3,741 points compared to 3,550 points for the competitor from Cupertino. However, while other Rocket Lake parts have now started to pepper the chart, something almost unbelievable has been happening at the top.

According to the latest performance table from PassMark, the Apple M1 is perfectly poised to take a shot at the top position, which even the naysayers will have to admit is an impressive feat for an ARM-based chip. Especially considering it would be removing the current “best” chip from the Intel stable in the i9-11900K if successful. The difference between the two is just 30 points, with the Apple Silicon improving to 3,620 points while the Rocket Lake processor has tumbled to 3,650 points. Thirty points almost sounds like a considerable amount, but this is actually just a +0.83% lead for the Intel CPU.

Even more promising for the Apple M1 8-core hybrid chip, which utilizes 4x Firestorm performance cores and 4x Icestorm efficiency cores, is the “low” margin for error status it has been awarded by the synthetic benchmark. This matters a lot here, because the Intel Core i9-11900K still has a “high” margin for error label – so its score could rise or could even plummet lower. It’s well known that the M1 struggles with some multi-core comparisons, but this is a low-power processor going toe-to-toe with a +125 W chip in Intel’s single-thread specialty. It makes the thought of Apple putting out more-capable silicon like the rumored M1X or M2 even more tantalizing.
